Top Eczema Creams and Lotions – How to Best Hydrate The Skin
As you go through the drug store aisles, it can be overwhelming to choose from the many products available for moisturizing dry skin and claiming to heal rashes including eczema. Which cream or lotion is most suitable for eczema problems?
Dryness, flaking, itching and red bumps are characteristics of eczema. It is important to use a cream, lotion or natural oil to treat the skin to reduce the inflammation and control the itching. Don’t just restrict yourself to the skin eruptions but be sure to moisturize your whole body to keep the skin from drying.
Usually the dermatologist will prescribe a cortisone cream to be applied topically twice a day. In addition to this, using a moisturizer two times a day is also recommended. Remember that there is a rule of three weeks on and one week off if you use cortisone. It is known to thin out the skin and this can result in vulnerability.
I personally did not achieve much benefit when I used cortisone by itself, but noticed that my skin improved once I added the moisturizer twice a day. When seeking a cream or lotion, look for products that are for sensitive skin and try to avoid those with alcohol, parabens, fragrances and questionable ingredients. If you like natural products, you can use one that has an olive oil, neem oil or coconut oil base from the health food store. Some people find that their eczema skin responds well to just using the oil directly as well. Applying vitamin E on the skin is also helpful. Neem oil has a strong scent but is helpful for a number of skin rashes including dermatitis.
One benefit of moisturizing is that it will relieve some of the itching. By doing this, you are less inclined to scratch and aggravate the skin. Be sure you aren’t using products with harmful chemicals and strong fragrances to not damage the skin or create an allergic reaction.
I was lucky to find a dermatolgist that knew the importance of moisturizing as some suggest to only use a cortisone cream. Be sure that your home also is not drying out your skin by using a humidifier. Eczema lotions should include a moisturizer twice a day to be sure that the body’s oils are not stripped away.
