Itching Hands and Feet Caused by Eczema
Eczema is a skin disease that causes dry itchy skin on your body and can cause a great deal of distress and discomfort. There is no cure for eczema, unfortunately although there are treatments you can practice that can help eliminate some of the symptoms. While eczema usually affects many parts of your body, a condition called dishidrotic eczema affects the hands and feet.
Dishidrotic eczema, aka vesicular eczema or hand and foot eczema is a recurring skin reaction that affects the feet and hands, specifically the sides of the fingers and toes and the palms and soles. While finding the cause of hand and foot eczema has been very difficult, some believe it is a type of allergic reaction while others believe it’s the result of abnormal sweating. Whatever the cause, it can cause extreme discomfort and often decreased use of both the hands and feet.
Facts about Hand and Foot Eczema
Although there are a lot of things doctors don’t know about hand and foot eczema, there are some things they’ve managed to determine. Dyshidrotic eczema affects both men and women and usually affects the before they reach 40 years of age. Similar to general eczema, dyshidrotic eczema is usually hereditary, meaning more than one member of the family general are affected by it. If one or both parents suffer from hand and foot eczema, it’s not unusual for one or more children to also be affected by it.
Stages of Hand and Feet Eczema
Hand and Feet Eczema usually comes in two stages. The first stage, which takes from 1 to 3 days, involves itchy bumps which turn into small blisters filled with clear fluid. These bumps can cause severe itching and a burning sensation. The second stage, which can become chronic, consists of the excessive itching causing the skin to become thick, scaly, red and cracked with very large and painful blisters. The most recommended treatment for this condition is the use of corticosteroids, antihistamines and antibiotics if a secondary infection develops.
Preventative Measures
If you are subject to attacks of hand and feet eczema, here are some things you may wish to avoid:
Strong detergent soaps
Deodorant soaps
Stressful situations
Solvents
Prolonged contact with water
Scratching
Latex or rubber gloves (use cotton whenever possible)
